Nelles Public School Addition

Nelles Public School Addition and Alterations

Project Summary

Nelles Public School is located on the east side of Grimsby and serves a student population of 230. Baker and Elmes Architects had previously provided consultant services for additions and alterations at the school in 1992.

The present addition was required to replace five portables. At the same time it was decided to provide 49 child care places through the Best Start provincial initiative. Within a restrictive building footprint, five classrooms, an LRT (Learning Resource Teacher) room, a new staff room and additional washrooms were added to the school and the computer area was doubled in size within the existing school. In the child care space there are rooms for infants, toddlers and preschool age children and administration and kitchen facilities.

Ian Elmes* was the designer on this expansion. Field review and contract administration was carried out by Quartek Group Inc. This project was started in July, 2006 and completed on time for students returning from March Break in 2007.

The design of this project was carried out by Ian Elmes, B. Arch., OAA, MRAIC, formerly of Baker and Elmes Architects. Ian Elmes and Richard Baker joined the Quartek team in 2006. Ian is now a Senior Associate Architect and Richard is a Senior Advisory Consultant at Quartek Group Inc.
