Nelles Public School

Nelles Public School

Project Summary

A large addition was wrapped around three sides of the existing school and contains a new main entry and gymnasium with change facilities, new classrooms, Kindergarten and Library. The gymnasium was upgraded in size and materials under a cost sharing agreement with the municipality. Modern heating, A/C, electrical and fire protection systems were also retrofitted to the existing school.

The community-use aspect of the gymnasium was reflected in the large entrance and crush space and in the locations of auxiliary spaces which can be locked off from the remainder of the school for evening use. The large stage is located on the side wall of the gymnasium, rather than the usual end wall, which serves the dual purpose of improving sight lines for school drama productions and providing an ideal seating area for school sporting events.
