The NCDSB consistently enhances its facilities to ensure optimal experiences for students and staff. Upgrades typically encompass mechanical systems for air quality, lighting, interior layouts, finishes, and accessibility improvements. At Sacred Heart, enhancements included upgrading mechanical systems, lighting, and interior finishes for five classrooms, two kindergarten rooms, two library spaces, a staff area, and completely replacing the heaving corridor slab. New rooftop units were installed to meet fresh air requirements and provide partial cooling, while LED lighting and finishes such as new paint, rubber flooring, T-bar ceilings, and updated millwork and cubbies were added. Classroom accessibility was improved by widening doors to meet current OBC standards and updating hardware. The gymnasium became more accessible with a lift from the gym floor to the stage. During the initial review, a Siporex roof deck was identified, prompting efforts to avoid additional loading and prevent penetrations from new material hangers. The project, impacted by COVID, was tendered in two phases. Phase 1 included replacing the corridor slab and finishes and adding the lift, while Phase 2 addressed classrooms, staff areas, corridor ceilings, and mechanical and electrical upgrades.
