It is with heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of long-time Quartek Group Principal Architect, Rob MacKenzie.

With a career spanning over 4 decades, Rob was an ever vibrant and enthusiastic voice in the Niagara architecture and design community, with contributions well beyond those within his professional role as an Architect. Drawing on his extensive experience in heritage buildings, Rob lent his expertise for many years as a member of the Municipal Heritage Committee in Niagara-on-the-Lake, helping to advance the principles of thoughtful and sensitive design. This was an extension of his work as an active member of the Niagara Society of Architects, promoting the importance of architecture, architects, and their impact on public spaces. More than anything else, however, it is Rob’s kindness and enthusiasm which has had the biggest impact on those whose lives he touched.

After a number of years working with Brian Watkinson in Niagara Falls and Stan Butcherd in Port Colborne, Rob joined Quartek Group in 1998, and has since been a leader and mentor to those who have had the pleasure to work with him within our company. Serving as company President from 2010 to 2015, Rob has since fulfilled the role of Vice-President and Director of Corporate Development. He fulfilled these roles while continuing to be a practicing Architect within the company, pursuing and executing projects throughout the region and beyond. A not at all comprehensive list of some of his contributions include: Peace Bridge Customs Building, Ridley College Athletic Complex, Niagara District Airport Terminal, Willowbank School of Restoration Arts, Meridian Credit Union Arena, Niagara wineries, and building condition assessments and studies for agencies and communities from Niagara to Dryden, Ontario.

Rob Mackenzie’s sudden passing has come as a shock to all of us here at Quartek Group. We will miss his presence in the office, his friendly conversation, and his guidance as we continue building on the legacy that he has left us. Our thoughts and prayers are with Rob’s wife, Deralyn, his son, Colin, and all his family and friends as they process this loss. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions to Canadian Blood Services would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements and further details can be found at
